What’s better? Solid Timber or Engineered Flooring?
There are a lot of misconceptions about engineered wood floors.
There are some fantastic engineered flooring products – both in straight timber and parquetry - but others aren’t nearly as well made. At Know-How we only ever work with the best materials. You can be assured that any Engineered product supplied by us will last for decades.
That’s because we always make sure that there is a substantial ‘wear layer’, which is the specialty timber veneer that sits on top of the base layer.
Cheaper, lower quality engineered timber flooring products have a very thin wear layer. This means they won't be able to be re-sanded, leaving your hardwood floors practically useless once the wear layer is worn through.
That is why engineered timber flooring has gained a bad reputation in some circles.
Because we carefully discern between high and low-quality materials, we have confidence in engineered timber flooring. In fact, a high proportion of the wooden floors we install are engineered floors.
Solid wood floors are far more durable. In fact, a well-installed solid wood floor can look amazing for up to a century. But because they’re a single piece of wood, solid wood floors are far more affected by temperature and humidity.
They will expand and contract far more than an engineered floor, especially in the changes of seasons we have here in Sydney. That’s why a lot of solid timber floors can have gaps at different times of the year.
High-quality engineered wood flooring expands and contracts far less than solid wood flooring, because of the criss-crossed ply construction of the base layer.
