The intricacies of Parquet Flooring: Crucial information to consider

IMPORTANT PARQUET FLOORING INFORMATION

The installation of parquet flooring involves skillfully arranging wooden pieces into intricate patterns. These patterns may repeat or interconnect with adjoining tiles to form larger, captivating designs. For ease of installation, the wooden pieces are bonded to a substrate, with thin plastic or metal frames sometimes utilized to maintain their shape.

Parquet Flooring showcases various wood types and colours, offering appealing contrasts within each tile. Oak is the most commonly used timber in parquetry, but walnut and more exotic woods are also popular, though at a higher cost.

UNFINISHED VS. FINISHED PARQUET: A COMPARISON

With parquet flooring, you are faced with two options: unfinished and finished (pre-finished) variants, each with its advantages and drawbacks. Unfinished parquet flooring allows for a personalised touch, providing the opportunity to select the precise stain colour, sealer, and other finishing treatments to achieve a custom look.

Finished parquet flooring will end up being substantially less expensive, as the tiles are manufactured and sealed in a controlled factory setting with industrial-grade machinery. This approach minimizes on-site work, eliminating the mess and odours typically associated with finishing flooring.

But the trade-off is that pre-finished flooring limits options for customisation in terms of styles and stain colours.

OPTIMAL LOCATIONS FOR PARQUET FLOORS

Parquet flooring can be installed in a variety of spaces, but its suitability may vary depending on the environment. It is particularly well-suited for formal areas, exuding an exquisite charm that complements upscale settings such as homes, hotels, conference centers, event halls, and office buildings.

With its natural warmth, beauty, and artisanal craftsmanship, parquet flooring adds a unique touch to entryways, dining rooms, living rooms, and open spaces utilised for formal occasions.

Another piece of important parquet flooring information is that it may not be suitable for small, confined spaces, as the intricate design requires ample room to be fully appreciated. Aesthetically, installing parquet in spaces like kitchens, where furniture and fixtures may create a cluttered atmosphere, can detract from the overall visual impact.

INSTALLING PARQUET FLOORING WITH PRECISION

Parquet tiles are rectangular in shape, featuring straight edges that allow them to be neatly positioned alongside one another in the flooring field. We will typically leave a small expansion area of 4-8mm around the room's perimeter, which is usually covered by trim.

While most parquet flooring is glued to the subfloor, thicker tiles may require nailing. But if nailing causes wood splitting, gluing is the better option.

To ensure a harmonious result, we will always create a "dry layout" before an installation. This involves laying out the flooring tiles before attaching them to the subfloor, giving both us and our customers an opportunity to double-check the arrangement to make sure it is aesthetically pleasing.

PARQUET FLOORING INFORMATION ABOUT WATER

Water poses a significant risk to wood flooring, although parquet flooring exhibits slightly better moisture resistance compared to wood plank floors.

Despite this advantage, it is better not to install parquet in high-moisture areas such as bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements, or any other location prone to excessive water exposure. These conditions can cause the parquet to swell, warp, separate, or develop mold.

REFINISHING PARQUETRY FLOORING: PROCEDURES TO CONSIDER

Parquet flooring can be refinished multiple times. However, refinishing parquet flooring presents unique challenges compared to regular timber floorboards. Due to the uneven grain orientation within each tile or across the entire floor, using a power sander may result in inconsistent finishes with visible grain scratches. In such cases, manual sanding may be necessary to achieve a consistent and smooth surface before sealing.
